Unconditional Love? [Nov. 2nd, 2005|07:20 am]

Just curious what folks thought of this talk:

http://library.lds.org/nxt/gateway.dll/Magazines/Liahona/2003.htm/liahona%20february%202003.htm/divine%20love.htm

My non-LDS Christian friends have been teaching me about unconditional love, which even the Bible references in this talk seem to refute. My arsenal of scriptures is mainly "obedience" scriptures rather than "unconditional love" scriptures, so I was wondering if folks here had any counterpoints.

Hey Guys,

I was wondering how do the LDS feel about adoption? Socially and on a theological level.

Do you believe in Unicorns? [Oct. 27th, 2005|03:30 pm]

So I was going through some translation work today as well as brushing up on some mythical legend, both hobbies of mine, when I came across an accusation claiming that unicorns are mentioned in the bible. This was a new one for me. Lo and behold I look up the passages in my trusty authorized KJV and there she is in Deu 33:17, Num 23:22, Psalms 92:10 and even good old Job 39:9.

Now I mention this not to make fun of anyone. Truly that is not my intent in the least so please do not get me wrong. I give everyone the benefit of the doubt on this one but the question arises, when every other translation takes the Hebrew word re'em to mean wild ox why would the 'least corrupted' one opt for unicorn?

I like the KJV I really do, but I think this is a strong introductory argument to the idea that, in fact, it is not the most reliable of translations.

That being said, if there are some people out there, regardless of your faith background, that believe the KJV is rightly endorsing the existence of unicorns I would love to talk with you. Not to tear you down or anything, I just think you would be an exceptionally interesting person to get to know.

This group has been pretty quiet lately, so I thought I would post something. :-)

I picked up a new biography of Joseph Smith at Barnes and Noble last night, and I'm really excited about it.

Bible Study Software? [Sep. 28th, 2005|07:10 am]

I'm guessing this group is probably pretty diligent about bible study. At the 1st of the year I'm planning to begin a more in-depth study of the New Testament than I have attempted previously. Since I seem to "run off at the fingers" this is going to involve a lot of writing. I'm looking for a Windows-based bible study software package that will support the use of parallel translations, including the ESV, which is becoming my personal favorite. The ability to enter large notes for particular verses is really important. Something I'd like to do is to be able to create topical guides. i.e. to collect all the verses related to salvation, the nature of the trinity, etc., in one list. I can probably do this in a Word outline, but it would be easier if the software supports it.

Paradoxically I can find Palm programs that support this kind of thing, but they're limited in the size of notes they support, can't export to other applications, can't print the notes, etc..

Most of what I find with google seems to be in the several hundred dollar range, so I know I must be overlooking something. Any ideas? Thanks!

I have been thinking about the headway that LDS church has made in the past decade and some interesting things, at least I think, have come up. While most mainstream denominations still do not recognize the Mormons church as a Christian group, many seem to be dealing with incredibly more fundamental issues such as the ethics behind homosexuality. And while few would ally themselves with the LDS church when our pastors quote the 2.6 billion Christians in the world they include the Mormons. When Muslim terrorist curse the Christian crusaders they include Mormons. When someone does a Google search for Christians, Mormons are subcategorized under Christians (at least they used to be until they recently reconfigured how their search engine runs). When liberal democrats mock the conservative Christian movements, Mormons are thrown in there too.

None of these things justify faulty doctrine, of which I am convinced that they have and in abundance, however it does make me think about the churches response to the LDS movement. A Messianic Jew was on the Larry King show once in a debate with an orthodox rabbi. Things got heated and the rabbi said, "You are no Jew!" to the man. The elderly German man looked into the eyes of the rabbi and quietly replied, "To Hitler I was a Jew." I am not saying that we should overlook the massive differences between the groups but maybe a little more compassion when faced with the persecution that comes with allying oneself with Christ would be nice. I don’t know. Your thoughts?

Presbyterian [Aug. 21st, 2005|11:08 am]

Hey Guys,

With the recent discussions about what it means to be part of a denomination and such I thought some might find this talk helpful. My pastor gave it last week and I thought it was really fitting to a lot of topics here. Please listen, it is only about 20 minutes long, and tell me what you think. I thought that a lot of the US history sounded similar to the Mormon church.

What is a Presbyterian?

Changes in LDS Church Emphasis [Aug. 9th, 2005|06:53 am]

The statement was made in this community a couple of days ago that the LDS church had transitioned from considering itself to be a non-Christian church to trying to be more Christian over the last 20 years. I happened to run across this in my personal study this morning and thought it might be of interest to some.
